Chapter 16: A Girl
The twenty-week scan fell on the twenty-seventh of January, the feast of Saint Nino.
Natia took the morning off from the hospital and sat in the corner of the dark room with her coat on her knees.
I lay on the table with my sweater rolled to my ribs and cold gel on my belly.
Levan sat beside me and held my hand and did not look at me.
He looked at the screen.
The technician had the lights down, and the screen threw a gray glow on his scar and his one open eye.
"May I?" he said to her.
She turned the monitor toward him on its arm.
He leaned in until his nose was a hand from the glass.
"Head," the technician said, and drew a small cross on it. "Spine. Four chambers, all working."
She glanced at me.
"Do you want to know what she is?"
"Yes," I said.
"No," Levan said at the same time.
We looked at each other.
"Say that again," I said.
"I wanted to say yes. My mouth got there late."
The technician smiled and moved the wand.
"Then you're looking at a girl," she said.
He did not move.
I watched the muscle in his jaw.
I watched him put his free hand flat on the glass, over the small curved shape.
"Her profile," he said. "That's her nose. That's her mouth."
