Chapter 7: Coat Drive

Cas did not open the door.

He sat up in bed with the sheet at his waist and spoke to the wood.

"It is shut because I shut it, Mother," he said. "Good night."

The handle turned once more.

Then Halina's cane tapped away down the hall, slowly, each step distinct, until the sound was gone.

I lay with the pillow over my face, shaking.

"Are you laughing?" Cas asked.

"I'm hiding."

"You are laughing."

"You just told your mother good night through a door," I said, "with me naked in your bed."

His mouth twitched.

"She has not heard me raise my voice to her in thirty years," he said. "She will make me pay for it at breakfast."

"Will she fire me?" I asked.

"She cannot. You work for me."

"And Leo."

"For both." His eyes dropped. "I would like to know, Miss Calloran, what you intend to do about that."

"Sleep," I said. "Then go to work."

I did, in my own narrow bed in the staff wing, with the door propped open.

On Saturday, Leo asked me to come to the coat drive.

"It's at my mother's church," he said at the kitchen counter, a stack of folders under one arm.

"On Polish Hill. The foundation gives out four hundred winter coats every year, and I'm short a pair of hands."

"I have the day off," I said.

"I know. That's why I asked."

"Cas's second rule," I said, "was no rides from you."
