Chapter 8: The Back Stairs

Leo turned his head, and the window was empty.

"Who was it?" he asked.

"The woman from the hall door." My voice sounded thin. "The old one."

He looked at the dark lot for a long time.

Then he put the car in gear and drove me home without a word.

It was the only time in a week I had known him to be silent.

At the staff door he kissed my forehead.

"Whatever she told you," he said, "ask me. Don't ask Cas."

"He told me to ask him, and not you."

"Yes." Leo's smile was tired. "We're consistent that way."

I could not sleep.

At three in the morning I gave up, put on a long grey nightdress and a cardigan, and went down the forbidden stairs.

The back stair was dark except for the hall light at the bottom.

A man sat on the fifth step from the bottom, with his elbows on his knees and a glass of water in his hands.

He was in shirtsleeves, and the key on its steel chain lay on the step beside him.

"You're not supposed to be on these stairs," I said.

"Neither are you."

"You made the rule."

"I know." Cas did not look up. "I sit here when I cannot sleep. It is the only way I know to keep them clear."
