Chapter 17: Silk
Seo-hwan slid the bolt across the door of Room Seven and turned the key as well.
Then he held up a long ribbon of pale silk, and let it unroll to the floor.
"Mother's gift," he said. "A Crane sash. It's for Founders' Day."
"It's beautiful."
"It's strong. I tested it."
Tae-gang laughed, and then saw his face, and stopped.
"Seo-hwan."
"Take your robe off, Rock."
The nickname went through him.
He had been called it a dozen times in the dark, tender and breathless.
He had never heard it in a voice like this, level and cool and absolutely certain.
"Hands," Seo-hwan said.
Tae-gang held out both wrists.
"Higher. Over your head."
Tae-gang lifted them.
Seo-hwan wound the silk twice around his wrists, firmly, and knotted it with quick, neat fingers.
He pulled the loose end up and over the low roof beam, where the lamp hook hung, and tied it off.
The silk drew Tae-gang's arms up taut.
He stood with his back straight, wrists bound above his head, and the grey robe hanging open on his bare chest.
"Can you move?"
"Barely."
"Can you pull free?"
Tae-gang tested it.
The silk held without a creak, and a hot, dizzy thrill ran from his scalp to his groin.
"No," he said, hoarse.
"Good."
Seo-hwan walked around him once, slowly.
He was in his shirtsleeves, his hair tied up with the jade pin, his round spectacles on his nose.
He looked like a scholar about to examine a student.
"I'm twenty-two years old," he said, "and for twenty-two years I have been told what to do. Do you know what I want?"
"Tell me."
"I want you to wait."
He stopped in front of Tae-gang and set one hot palm flat on his chest.
The tiger's gold eyes lay under his fingers.
He drew the hand down very slowly, over the ridges of the stomach, and stopped at the belt.
