Chapter 20: Elias at the Hollow

Rafe's POV

The bond was gone, and I had been wrong about what that would feel like.

I had expected to feel hollow.

I felt lighter, and I still wanted to stand exactly where she stood.

By evening Elias had come up the Moon Path.

I heard him before I saw him, one man's boots on the loose stone, and I was at the gate with Hazel and Dustin behind me when he stepped out of the trees.

He had a rifle on his shoulder and a canvas satchel across his chest.

His good grey coat was torn at the sleeve, and his eyes were red.

"Hollow law," I said. "You stay on the far side."

"I'm not coming in." His voice was calm. "Kin may speak once at the gate. I'm kin."

"Then speak."

He looked past me at his sister.

"Hazel. Come out here."

"No," she said.

"I'll make it simple." He swung the rifle off his shoulder and held it across his body. "Silver in the chamber. I stole it from the armory this morning. Do you know what silver does to a wolf, Hazel? Even a Daughter's?"

I felt my claws want to come out.

It was my want, and no one else's.

"Elias," Dustin said. "Put it down."

"Be quiet, Dustin."

"Put it down. You're my brother."

"I was." Elias's mouth twisted. "You gave her the page. You took her side in front of the whole pack. I was good enough to hit for it."

"You did hit me."

"I'd do it again."

"Then do it," Dustin said, and took one step forward through the gap in the boulders.
