Chapter 21: Dustin's Sentence
I held Elias to the ground until my wolf stopped shaking.
His broken wrist lay in the dirt, and his chest rose and fell under my paws.
"Finish it," he said.
He had his eyes shut.
"Do it, Hazel. You've got every right."
I shifted back where I stood, naked, with my knees on his coat.
"No," I said. "You'll walk out of Marrick land on your own feet, in front of everyone. That's worse for you, and that's why I'm doing it."
He opened his eyes.
I got up and left him there, and I ran down the path to the house.
Mabel had Dustin on the kitchen table, with two lamps on either side of him and her tweezers in her hand.
The silver came out of him in a bright, small piece and rang in the basin.
"Lung nicked, not holed," Mabel said, without looking up. "The boy's got a stubborn heart. I'll need him still for two days, and I'll need you out of my light."
I sat on the floor with my back against the table leg.
Rafe sat beside me, and neither of us said anything for the whole night.
Dustin opened his good eye at dawn.
"Did I say it?" he whispered.
"You said it to Rafe."
"Did he tell you?"
"He did." I took his hand. "Say it to me yourself when you can stand up."
It took him nine days to stand.
On the tenth morning the Moon Hall was full again, and I sat in my mother's oak chair for the first time.
It was too big for me.
The carved crescent stood up behind my head, and my feet did not quite reach the floor of the dais.
Rafe stood against the nearest pillar with his arms folded, where he could see me and where nobody had to look at him.
