Chapter 22: The Marking
I stood up out of my mother's chair, and my feet found the floor of the dais.
"I don't need a Luna," I said. "I am the Alpha of Marrick, and I'll keep the pack's books myself, with the Beta at my elbow."
A rustle of approval went round the benches.
"As for a mate."
I came down the three steps and walked the length of the hall.
Rafe watched me come with his arms still folded and his face stripped bare.
I stopped in front of him.
"Rafe Ellery," I said, loud enough for the back wall. "A Goddess put you in my path, and then she took it all back and let you walk away. You didn't."
"No."
"I'm not choosing you because a stone told me to. I'm choosing you because you burned my soup and held your tongue in the ring and kept your word when nothing made you." I held out my wrist. "You told me once you wouldn't mark me until I asked."
The whole hall went quiet.
"I'm asking," I said. "In front of all of them."
He unfolded his arms.
He took my left hand and kissed the silver crescent on my wrist, and the carved moons on the walls flickered once and glowed.
"Yes," Rafe said. "Yes. Whatever you want."
Three hundred wolves howled, and the roof rang with it.
Mabel was crying into her sleeve in the second row, and Dustin beside her, on his one good side, was crying too.
We did not stay for the feast.
He took me out of the back of the hall, and up the Moon Path by moonlight, and neither of us was in any hurry to be a wolf.
At the lookout above the Hollow gate there is a flat stone ledge with a view down the whole mountain.
