Chapter 10: Dominic's Morning

Dominic's POV

I woke at five with Elin's hand fisted in my shirt.

She had not let go of me all night.

I lay still and looked at her face on my pillow, and I did not deserve a single minute of it.

Three years I had said get lost to this woman.

It was the only sentence I trusted myself to say, because every other one ended in the truth.

She stirred, and I eased out from under her fingers one at a time.

She frowned in her sleep and curled toward the warm place I had left.

I stood at the bedroom door longer than I should have.

Then I dressed in the dark, took my keys and drove myself to the Marden house.

I did not usually drive.

I had not driven a woman I cared about since the night on Route 9, and my hands did not like it.

Rhonda opened the door in a silk robe with her hair brushed.

She did not look surprised.

"Dominic," she said. "At this hour. Come in."

She led me into the kitchen and put the kettle on.

The broken pane in the back door had been taped over with cardboard.

"You changed the locks with a sick girl inside," I said.

"I'd like to apologize for that." She set out two cups. "I didn't know she was upstairs."

"You knew."

She smiled the soft smile.

I had watched that smile through three Christmases and one funeral, and I had never trusted it.

"I'll be plain with you, since we are both tired of pretending," Rhonda said. "There are two things of Declan's that I want."

"I'm listening."

"The envelope in your desk. And your silence about the girl."

I kept my face still.

"Mina Lowell is a very sweet child," Rhonda said, "and I have nothing against her. But Elin gets this house at thirty, or on the day she marries. After that, everything Declan left is hers, and Mina has no claim to any of it."
