Chapter 11: Two of Us

Elin's POV

I woke in Dominic's bed with an empty pillow and a warm dent beside me.

I lay there a minute, listening to the old house.

Then I put on his shirt, because mine was still wet, and went to check on Mina.

She was sitting up against the pillows with the drip out of her arm and a glass of water in her hand.

Her color was better, and her eyes were clear.

"You should be asleep," I said.

"I slept for fourteen hours." She smiled a little. "I haven't done that since my mother died."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

She started to hum, very softly, the way a person does when she's trying not to need it.

It was my father's tune.

I knew every note, and my mouth opened and sang the second line before I could stop it.

Mina stopped humming.

She stared at me with her green eyes wide.

"You know it," she said.

"It's my father's."

"I know." Her voice cracked on the second word. "He's mine too."

The room went very quiet.

I did not feel anything for a moment, and then I felt all of it.

"Say that again," I said.

"My mother worked for him for ten years, Miss Marden. She was his secretary before you started middle school. He came to our apartment on Sundays and sang to me until I fell asleep."

"Mina..."

"He called me his little wolf too." She wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "He called us both that, Mr. Haldane told me. He said it was because we were the only two people who ever cried that hard."

I put my hand over my mouth.

Every piece of the last six days started to move, and I could not stop it.
