Chapter 14: Soup
I put the photograph in my coat pocket before she got out of the car.
Then I stood up, and I kept my face still.
"Linnea," Astrid said, coming up the planks with the pot in both hands. "I'm so sorry to drop in. I tried to call."
"I don't take calls from the Isles house."
"I know. I wouldn't either." She smiled the small, brave smile she wore on television. "It's chicken and wild rice. Margit's recipe. I thought you might not be eating."
Her hands had healed pink and shiny across the knuckles.
I could not help looking at them.
She saw me look, and she held the pot a little higher, so the scars showed.
"Come in," I said, because there was nothing else to say.
I put the soup on the stove.
She took the chair nearest the cello, and she looked at it for a while.
"That's the one he ordered," she said. "He drove to Chicago for it. Twice."
"I didn't ask."
"No." She folded her hands. "I won't stay. I only came because I'm worried about him, and I think you're the only person he'll listen to."
"Worried how?"
"He's not sleeping. He hasn't been to the office in nine days. He keeps going to Grand Marais, and sitting in a parked car, and coming home with paper."
"What paper?"
"Old camp files." She said it lightly. "Linnea, I've known Soren since I was nine. He has a way of getting a story stuck in his head. He had one about his father. He had one about the boat accident. He gets a thread and he pulls until the whole sweater is gone."
