Chapter 15: The Call

Elin came up the lane at ten that night with a casserole she had not cooked and a bottle of sparkling cider.

I told her everything before she got her coat off.

I told her about the envelope, the photograph, the dock and the soup.

She listened with her mouth open, and when I got to the baby she put the cider down on the counter very carefully.

"She said baby."

"She said 'a baby she hasn't told him about.'"

"Lin." Elin sat. "Who knew?"

"You. Dr. Koski. The technician. Nobody else."

"The insurer," Elin said slowly. "The statement. I told you at the clinic. I said it goes to the policyholder."

"The Isles house."

"And who sorts the mail at the Isles house?"

I did not answer, because we both knew.

In the morning I drove to hand therapy with my teeth set.

Dr. Koski was in the corridor outside the clinic, reading a chart he did not need to read.

I knew he had been waiting for me.

"Ms. Holm," he said. "Walk with me."

We went to the end of the hall, where the window looked out over the ore docks.

"I flagged your chart the week you came in," he said. "No information leaves this hospital without your signature, to anyone, including a husband and including a lawyer. I had it audited again at six this morning."

"And?"

"Nothing left. No calls, no faxes, no portal logins from outside. Whoever knows your business, they didn't get it from us."

"They got it from the mail."

"That would be my guess." He took off his glasses and cleaned them on his fleece. "I'm sorry. I can't flag the postal service."
