The hospital chapel at Chesapeake Mercy had eight pews, a stained-glass window that someone had donated in 1962.
A floor that creaked under every step.
On the third Saturday of December it held ninety-one people.
I watched from the vestibule, through a gap in the door, with my hand tight on the arm of the only person I had asked to walk me in.
"You look nervous," said Gran's lawyer.
"I'm not."
"Your hand says otherwise."
"It's the good kind of nervous."
He patted my fingers.
He was eighty-one, and he wore a morning coat that had been tailored in a decade before I was born.
He had cried twice already in the car.
"She would have loved this," he said.
"I know."
"She'd have said the dress was too plain."
I looked down.
It was ivory, simple, with long sleeves.
A high neck, and nothing at all on it except Gran's pearl brooch pinned over my heart.
"It's exactly right," I said.
The organist, who was a pediatric nurse on her lunch break, started the first bars of something slow.
