Chapter 22: Rink

The Dublin rink was nearly empty on a Saturday morning in late June.

There were no banners, no judges in blazers and no lines of parents in team jackets.

Only a few folding tables, a boom box on the boards, and nine kids in tights waiting for their turns.

Noah and I sat in the second row of the metal bleachers with two paper cups of terrible cocoa.

"It's ninety degrees outside," he said, "and I'm wearing a sweater."

"You said you didn't mind the cold."

"I said I worked a grill. I know about heat. I know nothing about ice."

I laughed and held my cup with both hands.

Across the rink, in the far corner of the bleachers, sat a woman alone in a lavender suit and big sunglasses.

She had come in late and taken the seat nobody wanted.

I knew her profile from forty feet away.

She had not looked at me once.

Grandma was two rows behind us with her cane and her thermos.

She had announced that she had never seen a figure skater in person and did not intend to be impressed.

Penelope's name was the sixth on the list.

When it was called, she skated out to the middle of the ice in a plain black dress that she had clearly sewn herself.
