You Ignored My Birthday So I Erased Myself From The Family novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: First

The ladder was in the storeroom, behind the mop bucket and a case of pickles.

It was eleven o'clock at night, and the kitchen was dark and smelled of bleach and cooling grease.

I climbed it in my sneakers, pushed up a square steel hatch and put my head out into warm air.

The diner roof was flat and tarred, with a low brick wall around the edge.

Noah had dragged two milk crates up there, set a folded blanket on each and put a thermos between them.

Beyond the wall, the town lay spread out in the dark.

I saw the bank sign blinking time and temperature, and the steeple of my mother's church.

I saw the far-off glow of the highway.

Behind the diner, in the field nobody had ever mowed, there were hundreds of tiny yellow lights that opened and closed in the grass.

"Fireflies," Noah said. "They come the last week of June. I wanted you to see it from up here, before they quit."
