Chapter 24: Nineteen
On the next fourteenth of March, which fell on a Sunday, the diner closed at two.
Noah's mother turned the sign on the door and pulled the blinds.
I stood behind the counter in my apron, wiping the same clean spot, and pretended I had not noticed anything.
"Go sit," she said.
"I can do the booths."
"You can do nothing. Go sit in the back."
She pointed at the long corner, where three booths had been dragged together into one table.
Someone had laid a white cloth over them, with a crooked line of mason jars down the middle, each holding a bunch of paper tulips.
Penelope had folded them out of yellow napkins.
Grandma was in the corner seat in her church coat, with her cane hooked on the table, looking pleased with herself.
"Sit, Chloe," she said. "I walked half a block for this."
I sat.
The door to the kitchen swung open.
Noah came out with a cake held in both hands, walking very slowly, his tongue between his teeth.
It was a lemon cake with white icing, a little lopsided on the left side.
