Chapter 9: The Five Hundred and Twentieth
"Ask you what," I said.
"Ask me why they came to you. Better yet, don't ask me." Conroy let go of my waist. "Ask the person who printed them."
He drove me into town with the heater running and neither of us speaking.
The print shop was on Water Street, between a bakery and a shoe repair.
A bell rang when we went in.
The woman behind the counter had gray hair pinned up with a pencil and ink on her thumbs.
She looked at Conroy, and her face softened.
"Mr. Merrow. You're back."
"I am. This is Della Schuler."
"The bride." She came around the counter at once and took both my hands in hers. "Oh, honey. I saw the video. I'm so glad you came in. I've been hoping you would."
"You've been hoping?"
"Since June." She let go and went to a filing cabinet. "I've been printing for this town for thirty-one years, and I've never had an order I liked less. Let me show you the file."
She laid a manila folder on the counter and opened it.
On the left was the proof I had already seen, with Colin's signature, for five hundred and nineteen cards.
On the right was a second sheet, a pink carbon copy of a change order.
The date on it was June twelfth.
Across the top, in block letters, it said CHANGE OF SHIPPING ADDRESS.
Below that it said: Ship all cards to bride's home address, 14 Cutler Street, the first week of October. Authorized by J. Merrow.
I read the address.
It was mine.
