Chapter 15: The Notary
Dina was waiting on the sidewalk outside the jail with her laptop open on the hood of my van.
"Okay," she said, before I could open my mouth. "I did something illegal and I feel great."
"Dina."
"The license scan has a notary stamp.
"Every stamp has a commission number, and the county keeps a roster of numbers.
"Your woman is seventy-three and lives in Pooler."
She turned the screen.
A name, a commission date, a street address.
Dev, leaning against the van with his arms folded, looked at the screen and then at me.
"One in the morning," he said.
"She's an old woman. I'd rather she's scared by me than by a man with a colonel."
"I'll wait in the car."
"You'll wait in the van with the engine off and your cap on."
"Yes, ma'am."
It took forty minutes to find the house, a flat brick ranch behind a chain link fence and a plastic Virgin Mary.
A porch light was on.
A woman sat in a plastic chair in the middle of the porch, bundled in a quilt.
