Chapter 10: The Log
I was still standing at the dresser with the folder in my hands when he woke up.
He saw my face first.
Then he saw what I was holding.
He sat up slowly.
"Keira."
"You had this," I said. "The whole time."
"Yes."
"At the Soo. I asked you if you could prove it. You looked right at me and said it was just your word."
"I know what I said."
"You stood in that bar last night while he told me I'd be dead without him." My voice was shaking now. "You had this in your drawer."
He got up and pulled on his jeans.
He didn't come toward me. He stood by the bed with his hands open.
"I left a watch," he said. "That's the log of me leaving it. In my handwriting. If that page goes to anybody, the Coast Guard looks at my license. My mate's exam is in July. Everything I've worked for since I was nineteen is in that folder."
"So you picked your license."
"I picked nothing. I kept waiting for a right time."
