Chapter 15: Night Shift
Kerry opened the door in her scrubs with her coat already on.
"Her bedtime is eight," she said. "She'll tell you it's nine. It is eight."
"Understood."
"There's soup. She won't eat it. There's cereal. She'll eat that."
"Understood."
"My number is on the fridge, and the hospital's number is under it."
She stopped with her hand on the knob and looked at me for a moment.
It was the same look she had given me on the porch, but something in it had loosened.
"My brother told me about the folder," she said. "The one with you in it."
"He told you?"
"He told me before you did, which means he's serious." She picked up her bag. "He hasn't told me anything in years."
"I'm not going anywhere, Kerry."
"I know. I read it." She almost smiled. "Your ears went back when I said his name."
She left, and the door shut behind her.
I stood in a stranger's hall with a pair of owl slippers at my feet.
