Chapter 4: Card Revoked

The management office at Linden Court opened at eight on Sundays, and I was standing outside it at seven fifty-five.

I had signed the lease in that office fourteen months ago.

A different woman had handled it then.

The man who unlocked the door now was tall, in his forties, with his shirtsleeves already rolled to the elbow.

His name tag said SULLIVAN LUND, PROPERTY MANAGER.

"You're early," he said. "Rent isn't due until the first."

"I'm the leaseholder on 4C," I said. "Sonya Roark. I need to cancel a key card."

He looked at me for a second longer than he needed to.

Then he stepped aside and let me in.

His desk was clean except for one monitor and a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST BOSS.

I told him which card.

He typed my name, asked for my date of birth, and turned the screen so I could see.

"Calvin Roark," he read. "Issued six months ago. Your husband?"

"Yes."

"The request form says you authorized it."

"I didn't."

Sullivan said nothing.

He opened a drawer, took out a single sheet in a plastic sleeve, and put it in front of me.

The request was dated in October.

At the bottom, in blue ink, was a signature.

It was my name, in my own looping capital D.

It was very good.

"That isn't mine," I said.

"I thought it looked rushed." He said it flatly, without any apology in it. "I should have called you. The card went through with a tenant's note attached, and the tenant's note said you were fine with it."
