Chapter 15: The Mended Clasp
Romy's restaurant opened at five, and at three it smelled of onions and bleach.
I was sitting at the pass with a coffee when the back door opened and Hayden's mother walked in.
She wore a camel coat and gloves, looking entirely out of place in a kitchen.
Romy put down her knife.
"Absolutely not," Romy said.
"I would like ten minutes with your friend."
"You tore a necklace off her neck."
"Yes," said Hayden's mother. "I remember."
My phone buzzed on the steel.
It was Declan.
"Rule six. I'm in the car outside. I'm also thinking about what you looked like in my shirt. Both are true."
I put the phone face down and felt my ears go hot.
"Romy," I said. "Ten minutes."
"I'll be at the stove. Doing very loud knife work."
Hayden's mother sat at the empty corner table and took off her gloves one finger at a time.
I sat across from her.
She put a long, flat jeweler's box on the cloth between us, and then a cheque beside it.
"The clasp is mended," she said. "You may have it, and the cheque is for a million."
"That's a lot of money for a necklace."
"It isn't for the necklace."
"What's it for?"
"For you to go home and let my son be married."
I didn't touch either of them.
"You told the whole table you took it from me," I said. "At your own dinner. And now you want to pay me to stop."
"I said what I could."
"You said it with your hands shaking."
"Yes." She folded the gloves over each other. "I'm fifty-five years old, Cora. I have been angry in that house for a long time. I learned to do it with my hands folded."
