Chapter 11: The Empty Line

The Wainright family clinic occupied the third floor of the company's old headquarters, and it was dark when Celia walked in at midnight.

She had left the hospital against the doctor's orders.

The junior assistant waited in the car.

Celia used her own key card on the glass door, and then on the records room.

She had never been in it before.

Rows of gray cabinets stood in the dim light, each one with a name on the front.

His was low, in the third row.

FALK, TROY.

She sat on the floor with the file in her lap and read it by her phone.

The first page was a childhood record from the orphanage.

Then a physical, at fifteen and a half.

A note had been clipped to it in her father's handwriting.

"Lifted a delivery van off a boy at the home. Confirmed by staff. Bring him."

She read it twice.

Then the shots began, the spring he turned eighteen.

One a year, every March, for ten years.

The line beside each one said the same thing.

"Suppressant. Dose increased. Subject compliant."

Her father had called it a precaution.

He had said Troy's health needed it, because strong boys sometimes hurt people by accident.

Troy had never asked.

She turned the page.

There was a surgical consent form, dated five years ago.

His signature was at the bottom, young and neat.

Under it was a billing code, and a line for the operative note.

The line was empty.

Celia looked at it for a long time.

She turned over the next page, and the next.

There was no operative report, no pathology, no follow-up.
