"Yes," Troy said. "I'm sure."

Celia searched his face.

She was looking for the lie, and there wasn't one.

"I meant every word at the wedding," he said. "I'll say it again if you want."

"Troy."

"You've known for eight years that I'd do anything for you. So let me say what I did."

She did not stop him.

"When you were eighteen, rivals of your father took you for a billion-dollar ransom. I walked in alone and took a bullet in the stomach getting you out. I spent six months in a hospital bed."

"I know that."

"I got a scholarship to study abroad. You came to my room and asked me to stay, because the board was eating you alive. I stayed."

Her fingers tightened around her phone.

"I joined your company as your assistant while I was still in school. When clients pushed drinks on you, I drank yours. Once I drank until my stomach bled and ended up in the hospital, and you took your meeting without me the next morning."

"I didn't know it was that bad."

"I know you didn't."

Celia's lips pressed white.

"You told me you weren't ready for children," he said. "So I went to your family's doctor and had a vasectomy, at twenty-three, before either of us had decided anything."

"I never asked you to do that."

"You said you hated the other ways. You said it would be easier if I just took care of it."
