Chapter 22: Peg's Table
Deanna's POV
By nine o'clock my mother's front lawn held a ham, eleven casseroles and twelve women in plaid.
The retired pharmacist stood at the gate with her purse on her arm.
Wyatt and I stood on the porch, one on each side of the door, because Peg had told us to.
"No talking," she'd said. "You're decoration."
Gavin's car pulled up at nine exactly.
A second car came behind it, and a man in a dark suit got out with a leather folder.
They came up the walk together.
Gavin had shaved, and he was wearing the charcoal coat, and he looked like himself, almost.
His eyes were red at the rims.
"Peg," he said, warmly, to the open door behind me. "Thank you for seeing me."
My mother came out onto the porch in her good cardigan, with a dish towel over her shoulder.
"Gavin."
"This is my attorney. He's here about the guarantee."
The man in the suit opened his folder.
He looked at the lawn, at twelve women with their phones raised, at me, and at the doorbell camera over my mother's head.
He closed the folder.
"Mr. Hallstrom," he said. "I've been made aware that the court froze your accounts and the board removed you yesterday. I'm not able to proceed on this matter."
"You're on retainer."
"With a client who can't pay it." He gave a small, tired nod to my mother. "Ma'am. I'm sorry for the trouble."
He walked back down the path.
Nobody on the lawn said anything, and one of the women took a casserole out of her car and carried it up the steps, and sat it by the door.
