Chapter 24: The Photo
The glass table in the Hallstrom boardroom seated fourteen, and I sat at the head of it.
Nobody had told me where to sit.
The old chair of the board had simply pulled out the seat and stood behind it, until I took it.
"Call it to order," he said quietly. "That's all it is."
I looked down the table at the directors with their folders squared in front of them.
The chief financial officer was gripping his pen.
My mother sat at the far end in her good cardigan, with a thermos and a plastic container on the glass.
She had come down from Duluth on the bus, because she wanted to see the room where it had happened.
Wyatt sat halfway down on the left, with the river behind his shoulder and the scar through his eyebrow.
He didn't smile.
He tipped his head half an inch, and that was enough.
"I call this meeting to order," I said.
My voice shook on the first word, and it held on the rest.
"There is one item. Two weeks ago, a letter went out ending the health plan for the retirees and widows of this company's earliest people."
Several directors looked at their folders.
"Gavin Hallstrom signed it. My mother is on that list." I looked at her, and she raised the thermos. "So are some forty others who helped build this place."
