Chapter 4: Ray's Man
Joanna let him in because I told her to.
She didn't like it.
She stood at the kitchen island with her arms crossed while Wyatt Corliss sat at her table, his coat folded on the chair beside him.
"Start with how you knew about the cards," I said.
"I sit on Hallstrom's board," he said. "The freeze notice went to every director an hour before you left the atrium. Gavin's lawyer sent it, and he marked it urgent."
"An hour before," I said.
"Before you'd even walked in."
I sat down across from him.
Joanna stayed where she was, and I felt her watching him.
"What did my father leave me?" I asked. "A savings bond. That's what Mom told me."
"Your father left you thirty percent of Hallstrom Home Systems."
Nobody said anything.
The refrigerator hummed.
"That's not possible," I said. "Gavin owns Hallstrom."
"Gavin owns thirty-one percent. Ray's stake was the next largest, and I hold twenty-five. The rest is split between old investors who've mostly stopped reading their mail."
"Gavin would have told me."
"Gavin has been voting your shares for three years," Wyatt said. "Ray put them in a trust, and your husband and your mother are its trustees. While you're married, Gavin's vote counts. Your mother signs what he puts in front of her, because she thinks it's about the lake house."
"I'd know if Dad left me a company."
"Ray wanted you to find out by being loved, not by being rich." His mouth moved slightly. "His words."
