Chapter 18: The Scan

I ran the whole way from the elevator to the cancer institute's third floor, and I didn't care who saw.

Mila sat in the waiting room in a paper gown under her sweater.

Her beanie was in her lap and her knees were pulled to her chin.

She looked about eleven.

"Hi," she said. "Don't make the face."

"I'm not making a face."

"You're making the face. You have the whole thing. Eyebrows and everything."

I sat down next to her and she didn't lean on me, which was how I knew.

"What did they say?"

"There's a spot on the lower left. Small. The doctor says it could be inflammation from the infusion. It could be the lymphoma coming back."

She said the words in the flat voice she uses for things she's practiced.

"They want a second scan on Friday, and then we'll know."

"Okay."

"Okay what?"

"Okay, we wait."

"Stop saying we," said Mila.

I blinked at her.

"Stop saying we, Vee. You say we every time. We have a spot. We had an infusion. It's not we. It's my body. It's my blood."
