Chapter 17: Harold
I phoned the Banking Commissioner's office from Russell's kitchen at seven.
By noon, a deputy commissioner in a gray suit stood with us in the club's front hall.
A state trooper in a tan hat stood beside him.
The deputy had a folded paper in his breast pocket.
He had asked for Mr. Ellacombe by name, and he had been told that the president of Ellacombe Savings was not a member in residence.
"Room six, on the members' floor," Russell said. "He's been signing for his lunch."
The doorman, who had known my father for twenty years, looked at the floor and said nothing.
The only stairs to the members' floor ran through the grill room.
So that was where we went.
The grill room was paneled in dark oak, with a fireplace and a long bar.
Sixty members sat over their Monday lunch, in blazers and good pearls, talking in the soft voices of people who owned things.
They looked up as the four of us came in.
