Chapter 22: My Mother's Piano

Alistair's hand came off the stroller.

I put mine on his arm before he took a step.

"No," I said.

He stopped.

I looked at my father across ten feet of sidewalk and a lifetime.

"You don't get to tell me what she'd think," I said. "You didn't even look in her piano bench."

He frowned.

"What?"

"Come to the house," I said. "I want to show you something."

I didn't wait to see if he'd follow.

He did.

He walked behind us all the way up Marlborough Street, ten steps back.

In the parlor he stopped in the doorway and looked at the gray walls.

He'd let them paint over her yellow.

I watched him notice that for the first time.

Alistair took Teddy into the kitchen and shut the door, and I heard him start a terrible song about tugboats.

I sat down on the piano bench.

Then I stood up again and lifted the lid, and took out the five black sketchbooks.

"Laurel never opened this," I said.

My father didn't come any closer.

"Faye, I don't need to see..."

"I haven't read them either. I've been scared to." I opened the first one on my knees. "So we'll read them together."

Gesture drawings. Hands. A hundred hands.
