Chapter 16: Hazel's Wolf
I called him with my daughter on my lap and her fever coming through my shirt.
I had never called Torin.
His number was in my phone as a name only, saved the night the photograph came.
He answered before it finished the first ring.
"Hazel," I said.
"I'm already on the road."
"How?"
"I felt her."
He said it flatly and hung up.
He was in my back garden in under an hour.
I do not know how he drove from the north ridge so fast, and I did not ask.
He came through the gate in the long black coat with his hair wild, and he stopped when he saw Hazel lying on the grass.
I had carried her out there because the kitchen was too hot, and the shop was full of the smell of bread and her fear.
She was shaking.
Her ears were furred and pointed, and the nails on her small hands had gone dark and sharp.
Jonah stood over her with his feet planted.
He growled at Torin as he came, low in his throat.
"Jonah," Torin said, and stopped three steps away.
"I'm not going to take her."
"Promise."
"I promise."
My son studied his face, and then he moved a half step to the side.
Torin knelt in the wet grass beside my daughter.
"Hazel, can you hear me?"
"My bones are itchy," Hazel said, in a small, cross voice.
"I know. That's your wolf."
"I don't have a wolf. I have a rabbit."
"You have both, and the wolf wants to come out and say hello."
"It hurts."
"It hurts at the start," Torin said.
"I know, because I did it at sixteen, in a barn, and I screamed for an hour. I'm sorry nobody's here who can tell you it'll be easier. It won't be, but it'll be short."
