Chapter 16: Her Mother's Rune
The frost cracked again, and a hair of black slid toward his heart.
Linnea did not think about the six weeks.
She drew the spiral over the ice a second time, and then a third, pressing until her fingertip bled.
The cold in her wrist doubled.
The black line stopped, and the ice thickened over it until it was a hard white seam.
She sat there until the window went grey.
Aldric's eyes opened at dawn.
"Don't carve on me," he said hoarsely.
"Too late."
A ghost of his old almost-laugh moved in his chest.
"You held it all night."
"I'll hold it as long as it takes, so you can stop dying at me."
He turned his hand over under hers and laced their fingers together.
Nine days later he was walking the corridors again, thin and furious.
The seam of ice still lay under his collarbone, and it would stay there until she could draw the poison out.
