Behind the Mask: A Billionaire Romance novel · Chapter 21 of 24

Chapter 21: Doors Open

By six o'clock on the fourteenth, six hundred masks were waiting in baskets at the Merriam's front doors.

They were plain silver half masks, each one wrapped in tissue, and my runner had spent four days handing them out of boxes.

Every guest would take one.

The program card said, in small white letters, Sorrell Group, sixty years, a night in silver.

Nobody had asked me what the silver was for.

I stood in the east wing with a headset on and watched the room fill from the doors.

Women in long gowns and men in black tie tied the silver on at the coat check, laughing.

Then they turned to look at each other and laughed again.

By seven the room was six hundred silver faces, and I could not have told a billionaire from a florist.

"Stage manager to producer," said the headset. "Channing's man is in the booth. He's got a key for the fire panel."
