Chapter 30: My Mother

"Mom."

She turned around.

She looked at me, and then at Waylon behind me, and then at the floor.

I had never once seen my mother look at a floor.

"Esme," she said. "Your father told me. About Mrs. Pace."

"She's resting."

"I know. I won't stay long." She held her handbag in front of her with both hands. "I'm not here to fight with you."

"Then why are you here?"

The elevator dinged behind us.

My father came out of it, breathing hard, with his car keys still in his hand.

He stopped beside her and didn't say anything.

My mother looked down the hall toward Gran's room.

"Is Annika in there?"

"Yes."

"Then I'd like to say it once," she said. "In front of all of you. If Mrs. Pace will have me in her room."

I looked at her for a long time.

"I'll ask her," I said.

Gran was sitting up with a cup of red gelatin she was refusing to eat.

Annika was in the chair beside her.

"My mother's here," I said. "She wants to come in."

Annika went white.

Gran set the gelatin down.

"Well," she said. "Let her in. I've been dying to see what she wears to a hospital."
