Chapter 16: The Cove
In the old life, the cove was where they found his boat.
I remembered the details from the newspaper.
A sixteen-foot skiff, overturned off the point at Gull Cove.
A life jacket, an oar, a hat.
No body.
The sheriff had said the tide ran strong on a night.
I had believed him for fifty years.
The foreman told me something first, at six o'clock, in the shop, over thermos coffee.
The credit union had telephoned on Friday to confirm an eight thousand dollar loan against the yard, taken out Tuesday, with my father's signature.
My father had signed nothing.
I told the foreman everything else.
I told him that Dean would run, and that he would take the skiff, and that I wanted to catch him doing it.
I did not tell him how I knew.
He did not ask.
By dusk there were six boats in the creek behind Gull Point, lights off, engines idling low, and a deputy in the bow of the foreman's workboat with his hat tipped back.
