Nobody at my father's table moved.
A crew boss near the door had half risen, with his napkin still in his fist.
Finbar walked the length of the room.
Rain dripped from his sleeves onto the floorboards.
He stopped at the foot of the table, where the union men sat, and set his hands flat on the cloth.
"Stroud," my father said.
"You've got some nerve."
"I've got a trade," Finbar said.
"Sit him down," Declan told the two men at the door.
They took Finbar by the arms and put him in the empty chair beside the priest.
He let them.
I was on my feet without knowing it.
"Dad."
"Sit, Siobhan."
I sat, because the whole table was watching me, and a daughter who argued tonight would lose him faster.
