Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Kaitlyn stood there breathing hard, with her own words still ringing off the gold walls.

I watched it land on her face.

Reece turned around very slowly.

"Three times?"

"Reece, I didn't mean it like that."

"She was in labor, Kait. For six hours. And you had my phone."

At table three, Ruthann stood up in her navy satin.

"I placed the first page myself," she said, loud enough for the whole room. "Ten after six. Labor and delivery, for Dr. Pelham."

"The operator called me back and said a woman picked up and told her he was in surgery."

She sat back down and snapped her gum.

Kaitlyn laughed.

It came out high and wrong.

"It was a joke. Everybody knows how we joke."

Nobody laughed with her.

Reece's mother stood up beside her and took her by the elbow.

She walked Kaitlyn out between the gold tables, with Kaitlyn's heels skidding on the dance floor.

Every face in the room turned to watch them go.

I was still holding the microphone.

At table four, an old man in a white dinner jacket put up his hand.
