Chapter 30: First Word
On Christmas Eve morning, my father's porch rail came off in my hand.
I was carrying a bag of groceries up the steps.
I grabbed the rail for balance, and the whole top piece lifted out of its posts.
I stood there holding it in the snow.
My father had built that rail the summer I was nine.
I'd watched him from the top step with a popsicle.
I called Morgan from the porch.
"Nine, Four. I broke the house."
"Copy. What part?"
"The part my dad made."
He was quiet for a second.
"Twenty minutes," he said.
It was nineteen.
He came in his green truck with the big one's digger truck behind him.
The cast had come off three weeks earlier.
His right hand was still stiff, and he worked it open and shut on the way up my walk.
The kid jumped out with a toolbox.
The lieutenant had a clipboard and a measuring tape.
The big one had a pan of stuffed cabbage, because it was Christmas Eve, and you don't show up anywhere empty-handed.
"On Christmas Eve?" I said. "You've got families."
