Chapter 26: Nine Seconds
Mickey ran out into the snow.
Across the street, Vin's door stood open over the shoe repair.
His two chairs were knocked over in the window.
At the far corner a pair of red taillights turned south and were gone.
The burn turned with them.
"Aoife!" Mickey yelled.
She was already coming down the stairs in her boots with her coat half on.
"Where is he?"
"South. They've got him in a van."
Mickey turned on Shawn, who'd followed him out onto the sidewalk.
"Where's he taking him?"
Shawn didn't pretend.
"The warehouse on the lake," he said. "Pietro's. Down past the old steel mill, where the river comes out. I drove a van there twice."
Mickey went back inside.
He dialed the floor safe in the dark by feel and took out the ledger.
Then the pocket safe, and the photo strip.
He wrapped them in his dad's tool roll and tied it shut.
He called Vin's driver. It went straight to voicemail.
He called the detective's card. Voicemail too.
"It's Mickey Corcoran," he said after the beep. "Pietro Bianchi just took Vin off Milwaukee Avenue in a van."
