Chapter 13: Who Told Him
Rhett was waiting in the staff lot behind the arena, leaning on the hood of his truck.
Snow had started, thin and dry, and it caught in his dark hair.
His eyebrow bandage had come loose at one corner, and he hadn't fixed it.
He held out a paper cup.
"Tea," he said. "With honey. You skipped dinner again."
I took it because my hands needed something to hold.
"Get in," he said. "The heater's on."
The truck was old and smelled like pine air freshener and wet wool.
A little purple hair tie hung from the rearview mirror.
Dottie's.
He climbed in beside me and shut his door, and the snow went quiet against the windshield.
"Good game," I said.
"You're not smiling."
"Jase stopped me in the tunnel."
His hands stopped moving on the wheel.
"He told me to ask you one question."
"Then ask it."
I turned the cup in my fingers until the tea shivered.
"How did you find out about my story?"
The heater ticked.
I watched him decide.
It took him less than a second, and that was worse than if it had taken longer.
