Chapter 18: Who Signed

Doug didn't move for a second.

Then he uncrossed his legs and smiled at the committee.

"That's a misunderstanding," he said. "I'm not a physician. I don't order anything."

"You signed the protocol," Dunne said, without turning around.

"I signed a budget."

"You signed the players."

The chair put her pen down.

"We'll take ten minutes," she said. "Nobody leaves the building."

The committee stood.

Dunne gathered his folder and walked out fast, his face composed.

Doug went after him.

The hallway had a coffee cart, a water fountain and Tate on his bench, and by the time I got there Doug had caught Dunne by the sleeve beside the fountain.

"What the hell was that?" Doug said, low.

Dunne pulled his arm free.

"That was me answering a question. In front of an endocrinologist."

"You told me it was temporary. You sat in my office and promised me everything comes back."

"I told you it usually comes back." Dunne's voice was still smooth. It wasn't warm anymore. "You told me you needed five men on the ice through April. You told me whatever it takes. I have that email, Doug."
