Chapter 21: In Front of Everyone
Silvan did not step back.
He leaned on his cane and let Anselm come, and at the last moment he brought the cane up.
The silver head caught Anselm across the wrist, and Anselm howled.
Edith Orsey swung her handbag with both hands.
It hit Anselm in the side of the head with a solid, heavy thud, and he went down on one knee on the grass.
"That's for my kitchen floor," Edith said.
Two Ravenscroft guards were on him before he could rise.
They pinned his arms, and he twisted and kicked and screamed, with his gray morning coat torn at the shoulder.
"Let go of me! Do you know who my father is?"
"We do," said a voice from the drive. "That's why we came."
Linnet turned.
Six uniformed officers were coming across the south lawn at a fast walk.
A woman in a dark suit walked at their head, with a folder under her arm and a badge on a chain around her neck.
Behind them came a gray-haired man with a briefcase, who was Madam's lawyer, and behind him walked Mr. Dray.
Mr. Dray's face was gray and sunken.
He kept his eyes on the ground.
"Anselm Dray," the woman in the suit said, "I am arresting you for the attempted murder of Silvan Ravenscroft, for forgery, and for the fraudulent transfer of Orsey Looms' patents."
"You can't arrest me at my own wedding!"
"I can arrest you in the middle of the sea," the woman said. "Hold out your hands."
"No."
"Do it, or we do it for you."
Anselm looked around the lawn.
Four hundred people were looking at him, and not one of them looked away.
A man in the front row stood up and walked out.
