Chapter 24: Caged
The following October, Orla gave us her garden.
It was a square of grass behind the South Boston house.
There was a pear tree, a fence, and a plaster Mary in a bed of late mums.
Forty folding chairs stood in rows on the lawn.
The old captains sat in them in their good suits.
"You'll want the priest to be brief," Orla said at my shoulder, straightening my veil with small dry hands. "He won't be."
"I know."
"You'll cry."
"I won't."
"You will. It's a tradition. I've cried at every wedding since I was nineteen, and half of them were funerals."
I laughed so hard that I had to hold the pear tree.
My father sat in the front row in his wheelchair, in the navy suit I had bought him, with a blanket over his knees.
The stroke had taken most of his words, but not his eyes.
They found me coming down the grass, and the good side of his mouth went up, and he put a shaking hand over his heart.
Lena sat beside him in a green dress with her hair loose.
She had a job at a florist's in Southie and a lawyer Orla paid for.
She held a bouquet in her lap that she had arranged herself.
She winked at me.
Declan had gotten nineteen years.
I had stopped keeping track of the days, and it surprised me how easily I had stopped.
