Chapter 21: The Morning After
I woke to the smell of butter and the sound of a man trying to be quiet in a kitchen.
Saturday light came through the bedroom window in long pale stripes.
It lay across the bare mattress, the one chair, and my bra hanging off the lamp.
I stretched, and every muscle in me felt used and fine.
Down the hall a pan clanged, and Nelson said a word he never said on stage.
I pulled on his flannel shirt and went to look.
He stood at the stove in his boxer briefs and a T-shirt, with a spatula in one hand.
The kitchen smelled like eggs, and the toaster was on fire.
Not the whole toaster.
One slice, glowing orange at the top.
"Don't look," he said.
"I'm looking."
"I said I'd make real food."
"That's real food that's trying to leave."
I pulled the plug and flipped the slice into the sink with a fork.
He watched me do it with a face that did not belong to a candidate.
It belonged to a man whose house had finally had someone in it.
