The woman with the county badge walked into the boardroom.
"Gordon Merrick," she said. "I'm from the prosecutor's office. These two men are with the state."
"Conspiracy," said one of the men. "Intimidation of a witness. Falsifying business records."
Josiah's lawyer sat very still beside me.
He had spent Sunday morning sending everything to this exact woman.
He had not told me, in case I looked too hopeful.
Gordon straightened his tie with his unburned hand.
"This is absurd," he said. "I have friends on the county commission."
"I know," said the woman. "They called me at breakfast to say they would not be taking your call."
One of the men stepped forward with a pair of steel cuffs.
Gordon looked at them, and then at the twelve faces around the table, and then at his daughter.
