Chapter 23: Fall Fling
The next Fall Fling fell on the first of October, a Friday, a year less one day after they tied me to the statue.
The same speaker sat on the same steps.
The same hundred students stood around the same stone fountain with plastic cups.
I walked into the middle of them at five minutes to nine in a gray hoodie.
The ring was on my right hand, and no one was holding my arms.
My roommate walked beside me with his cracked phone held up.
"Still recording?" I asked.
"I'm an engineering major," he said. "I record everything."
The crowd parted without being told.
It did not go quiet the way it had in the dining hall, or at the bonfire.
It just made room.
Gordon Merrick was eleven months into a four-year sentence by then, and the whole school knew it.
The fountain's water was turned on and glowing.
The founder's bronze book had been polished, and somebody had left a paper cup on it.
