Chapter 15: The Voice
Tori's safe flat on Aramingo had a kitchen table, a bad lamp, and one phone charger that fit.
I stitched Carter's eyebrow first, because I could not listen to my brother with his blood still running.
He sat very straight on the kitchen chair.
Three stitches, and he did not make a sound.
"Your ribs are cracked," I said.
"They'll mend."
"Take your shirt off."
"Calla."
"I'm a nurse right now."
"Take it off."
He did.
Bruises already lay across his side, purple and black, in the shape of the nephew's knuckles.
I taped him tight and kept my face blank, and my hands stayed steady, which surprised me.
Tori took her coffee out to the stairwell without being asked.
She shut the door and left the two of us with a cracked black phone plugged into the wall.
It took ten minutes to wake up.
The lock screen showed a photo of me at fifteen, squinting in a graduation cap two sizes too big.
