Chapter 28: Two Mothers
"What do I tell him?" Corey said.
"The truth," I said. "I'm a reporter. I'm busy."
He held out his hand.
"Come with me."
"To a meeting with a scout?"
"He asked who you are. You're better at answering than I am."
At two I sat on a plastic chair outside the coach's office, in my coat, with my finals notes on my knees.
The door was half open.
The scout was a heavyset man with a lanyard and a folder of his own.
"Teams don't like surprises, son," he said. "That clip from September. Anything else like it out there?"
"No, sir."
"How do you know?"
"Because everything I did is in that video, or in that paper on your desk."
The Ledger was on the desk.
My story, front page up.
"And the girl in the jersey?"
Corey looked through the door at me.
"That's Joni Burkett," he said. "She wrote that."
The scout picked up the paper and looked at my byline for a long moment.
Then he looked at me over his glasses.
