Chapter 14: Chauffeur

At five in the morning, a black sedan idled outside Pomeroy's back door.

I was carrying out two bags of trash with flour to my elbows.

The man beside the car wore a gray jacket and a flat cap pulled low.

"Morning, ma'am," Nathaniel said. "I'm the driver."

I dropped one of the bags.

Dee came out behind me with a rolling pin, saw the cap, and went very still.

"No," she said.

"Dee."

"No. I have opinions about men in caps. I have had them for six years and I have been so polite."

"You may say them," Nathaniel said.

"A man in a cap told my best friend he was only the driver."

"Yes."

"And she believed him for four hours."

"Three and a half."

"Dee," I said.

"I'm saying it so it's said."

She poked the rolling pin at his chest.

"If you hurt her again I'll put you in the proofing oven."

"That seems fair."

"It's not fair, it's mild. Go."

She went back inside, muttering, and the door slammed hard enough to shake the sign.
