Chapter 47: Vows

Tala's POV

I left the house at half past four with a lemon sapling in a pot under one arm.

In my other hand I carried Lourdes's spade.

I had bought the tree on Friday and hidden it behind the shed.

I had told nobody but Dessa, and Dessa had said, "Don't dig for more than ten minutes, you're pregnant," and then helped me hide it.

The streets were gray and empty.

The church was two blocks away, and the side door was unlocked, as it always was.

Behind the church there was a small yard of cracked paving and one bare patch of earth beside the wall.

I knelt on a folded towel and set the spade in the dirt.

I'd said yes to Angelo the next morning, at the kitchen counter, with his coffee going cold between us.

He had asked me again in plain words, and I had said, "Yes, and I want to do one thing first."

This was the thing.

I wanted one tree that was not for the dead and not for a fight.

Nobody had pulled this one up or thrown a lemon from it.

I dug for ten minutes in the morning quiet.

I had the root ball in the hole and the first handful of dirt over it.
