Mom's kitchen smelled like burnt toast and the lavender soap she bought by the case.

Corinna sat at the table with the printed sheet flat in front of her.

She had not touched it since she sent me the photo, and she had not cried either.

Bernadette sat across from her in her blue robe, with the clinic bracelet still on her wrist from the morning.

"Read it to me," Mom said.

"Mom."

"I can read it myself, baby. I want to hear you say it."

Corinna's voice was perfectly even.

"Candler, C. Room 412. Booked twenty-three days prior."

"That's the day before you came to Sunday dinner and told us about the green dress."

"Yes."

Mom turned the sheet around with one finger and looked at it for a long moment.

Sullivan stood by the stove with his hands in his pockets.

I stood by the door, because no one had told us where to sit.

"Your father would've said I raised a girl who did the right thing the wrong way," Mom said.

"He would have said it kinder."

"He'd have been lying."

Corinna made a sound that was half a laugh.

"Lavinia wants me at the altar in white at four tomorrow," she said.
